Esperance – Cape Le Grand NP

We stayed in Esperance for 4 nights and I enjoyed exploring the town, both on foot and on the bike, whilst Paddy had to get some urgent work done. The first two days were very windy and overcast, not showing the beautiful colours of the ocean to us. We could see the water from our van (stayed at the RAC Caravan Park close to town). By the third day out came the sun and we jumped at the chance to take the Ocean Drive to explore the incredible beaches which Esperance is known for. We were not disappointed and all you continually heard out our mouths were “WOW!”.

Paddy was determined to swim but when we reached the water the shark alarm was sounding. A 2m shark had been sighted just offshore about half an hour earlier. As anyone would he gave the swim a miss. We took some great walks along the beaches, admiring the clear waters and white sand that was so soft under foot.

From Esperance we took off to the most magical location – Cape Le Grand National Park. This NP is about 45 mins from Esperance and we booked in to stay 2 nights at Cape Le Grand Campground. Most people like to stay at Lucky Bay but we couldn’t get in. We didn’t mind as our campground had great facilities and was really quiet. The only thing I did mind about this spot were the snakes. We saw four in one day. Brown and tiger snakes, all very venomous. Most were out on the paths or roadways just enjoying the sun. Please – don’t let this put you off visiting this magnificent park.

The waters are the bluest and clearest you have ever seen in your life. The white sand is like walking on talc powder. Paddy had the drone on overdrive and got some incredible shots. We visited and walked along all the beaches in the park and Paddy swam at Lucky Bay. He said the waters were like nothing he had swum in before. So clear and pristine. I was very envious that I could not go in due to my recent surgery and current ear issues. These beaches in the national park are surrounded by huge granite rocks that have been there for millions of years.

We hiked up Frenchman’s Peak, a grade 5 track that takes you up the rock face to get a view of the park and right across towards Esperance. Hard going but so worth it. The days were windy but sunny and we could only imagine what summer days there would be like. Some of the beaches you can drive on and we enjoyed two nights on the beach near our campground watching the sunset.

Esperance and Cape Le Grand have been a highlight and we will definitely return to them again in our future travels. The photos below and in our photo gallery will bring you along on our journey of this lovely little town and stunning National Park.

Next adventure- the Nullarbor….
