NT to WA

We spent a few days chilling in Katherine.  We needed to get a powered site to charge the van and allow us the chance to enjoy some air conditioning! The days and nights are getting hotter.  We went on a bike ride along the Katherine River, we read books, we had a great swim in the hot springs, I had a remedial massage and we re-stocked our supplies.

Funny story – our friend Rosie Welsford told us about a casting call out for a couple aged 55-70yrs in Katherine at the time we were there. It was for Nitmiluk Tours, who were updating their brochures & needed a couple to photograph. This meant a free helicopter flight, another gorge sunset cruise and other special location shoots. We thought this would be fun so we applied. Paddy kept laughing at me because I was convinced we would be picked to do it. You know, right time, right place!! Well it was not to be for us and all I got from Paddy was I told you so! Oh well, got to be in it to win it. Would have been super fun for a laugh.

Leaving our chance at stardom behind us, we left Katherine and headed towards a new state – beautiful Western Australia.  Both of us loved every bit of what we experienced in the NT but it was time to get excited for WA, and especially our first experience in the Kimberley.

We drove for about 4 hours before stopping at a gravel pit for the night.  It was about an hour from the NT/WA border and just off the Victoria Highway.  Found it on Wiki Camps and it was called Googlie Creek Holes. We shared the spot with a huge herd of Brahman cows!  It was a great location to catch up on my blog.

The next morning we reached the checkpoint and had to hand over our honey, an old banana I had forgotten about and a lemon that was not quite frozen.  We knew what to expect so had cleared out most of the restricted food items. They checked all compartments in our car and van, which didn’t take long and we were on our way into WA!!

We cracked up laughing when our clocks went back 1.5 hours as we had completely forgotten about the time difference.  It was now only 8am and we were only 45 mins from our destination – Lake Argyle.  With check in at 11am we had plenty of time to spare. We were in the middle of nowhere so had no option but to go straight to the Lake Argyle Resort and wait to check in.  What a place to wait!! This was the moment the magic of the East Kimberley region began….
